About Us

Eastern States Group began as a construction company in 1953. Now managed by the third generation of the family that began the business, Eastern States Group has established itself as a leader in the home building, leasing, self storage, construction and development industries in Delaware and the surrounding area.

Gene Julian launches Eastern States Construction Company as a public works construction company based in Wilmington, Delaware

1976

Eastern States buys its first piece of land for development in New Castle County

1977

Eastern States buys its first commercial building in downtown Wilmington and begins leasing to tenants

1978

Eastern States Construction purchases its first asphalt paver and expands its services to include road construction

1980

As the environment comes more into focus, Eastern States Construction adds eco projects and restorations to its expertise

1989

Sentinel Self Storage opens its first facilities in Stanton and Newark, Delaware

1989

Benchmark Builders breaks ground on its first neighborhood, Frenchtown Woods in Bear, Delaware

1990

Eastern States Group relocates its headquarters to First State Boulevard in Stanton, Delaware

1993

Benchmark begins building active adult neighborhoods, which has become Benchmark’s signature business

1995

Eastern States Group turns a floodplain next to First State Boulevard into First State Golf Center

1999

Eastern States Construction wins DuPont Contractor of the Year for Facilities Services Sites

2000

Sentinel Self Storage expands across state lines for the first time, building and opening a facility Elkton, Maryland

2004

Eastern States Development Company begins long-range planning for The Town of Whitehall, the region’s first master planned community

2012

Sentinel Self Storage enters the New Jersey market with the acquisition of a facility in Carneys Point

2016

Sentinel Self Storage enters the Pennsylvania market with the acquisition of a facility in Spring City

2016

Eastern States Construction wins 2016 Delaware Contractor’s Association Construction Excellence Award for Smart Growth, affirming their continued commitment to sustainability

2017

Eastern States Construction wins 2017 Delaware Contractor’s Association Construction Excellence Award for Infrastructure Construction. The Cecilton to Pearce Creek Water Main Transmission project met the clean water needs of an expanding population. The project team was focused, aggressively completing the project on time and under budget by almost half a million dollars.

2017

Eastern States Construction wins 2017 DuPont Contractor Safety Excellence Award for outstanding safety, health and environmental performance.
